That is the beauty of ham radio! There are WAY MORE options than you will probably ever want! haha
First off, what kind of budget are you working on?
What kind of functionality do you want? Do you want to be able to track the vehicles on a map while they are out and about? Do you have repeaters near you that you can use for the range?
You are probably looking at a 50watt radio for both vehicle and home use. There are some nice home station VHF/UHF radios that will do 100-200watts, but you are looking at close to $1000 apiece for those. A good, solid 50 watt radio will run you max $600… average $200-400.
The big consideration is going to be your antenna setups. You can GREATLY increase the range of your signal with different antenna setups. Your range issue is really going to depend on the terrain around you.
Let me know what kind of budget you are working with, and roughly where you live, and I can look into some good options for you 🙂
